FIRST PRODUCTION OF THE DOVES PRESS, PRINTED IN C. 25 COPIES ONLY, FOR PRESENTATION TO EMPLOYEES AND FRIENDS OF THE PRESS. Although trial pages of the Agricola had been set, Cobden-Sanderson decided to test the type on an English text, and this extract was chosen to be printed in a broadside format to be framed and displayed (as this copy appears to have been). The text is a passage from Cobden-Sanderson's article 'Bookbinding' (first published in English Illustrated Magazine , May 1891). The broadside was composed by John Henry Mason (probably in June 1900) and printed by H. Gage-Cole (probably in October 1900; the paper arrived at the Press in that month and Mason and Gage-Cole's own copies were inscribed and dated 3 November 1900 by the author). 'Copies were given to staff, pupils and friends "to remind us all of the spirit in which we should work"' (Tidcombe Doves Press , p. 34), and one of Cobden-Sanderson's pupils, Emily Preston, 'said it was considered a rare possession by the friends to whom it was presented' (Tidcombe, p. 211); only one copy can be traced at auction since 1975.
