COCKBURN, Major James Pattison (?1779-1847). Views in the Valley of Aosta. Drawn from Nature by Major Cockburn and on stone by A. Aglio and T. M. Baynes . London: C. Hullmandel for D. Walther, [after 1823]. 2° (474 x 323mm). List of plates, title with lithographic hand-coloured vignette view, 29 HAND-COLOURED LITHOGRAPHIC PLATES by A. Aglio and T. M. Baynes after Cockburn. (Occasional light finger-soiling.) Contemporary green half calf, green calf lettering-piece on front cover, spine gilt in six compartments (lower joint and spine skilfully repaired). FIRST EDITION of a rare work: it has appeared in British auction records only twice this century, in 1909 and 1916. The plates are dated 1822-1823, the watermarks 1820-1822. Cockburn was trained by the landscape artist Paul Sandby R. A., professor of landscape drawing at the Royal Military Academy, and, while on leave from the army, executed many drawings of continental scenery, especially in Switzerland, such as Views to Illustrate the Simplon Route and Views to Illustrate the Mount Cenis Route (both 1822), as well as the landscapes for Donaldson's Pompeii Illustrated (1829). Aglio and Baynes were accomplished lithographers: the Italian-born Aglio was a frequent exhibitor at the Royal Academy, particularly of landcsapes, and is perhaps best known for his collaboration with Viscount Kingsborough in his monumental Antiquities of Mexico (1830-48). The present work is not in Abbey or Lonchamp.
