CODY, WILLIAM F. ("Buffalo Bill") (1846-1917). Cabinet photograph signed ("W.F. Cody 'Buffalo Bill'"), by Stacy, Brooklyn, N.Y. (imprint on mount), n.d. [circa 1900]. 165 x 108 mm. (6½ x 4¼ in.) including mount, signature slightly smudged (probably by Cody himself). A shoulder-length vignette portrait of Buffalo Bill, signed on the brim of his Stetson. "Civil War scout, and later Indian scout, he killed over 4,000 buffalo in 1867-68. Ned Buntline dubbed him 'Buffalo Bill' and made him a popular hero. The highly successful Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show, which Cody organized in 1883, played to audiences in the East and in Europe, and featured Cody, Annie Oakley, and - briefly - Sitting Bull"--W.M.
