"Civil War scout, and later Indian scout, he killed over 4,000 buffalo in 1867-68. Ned Buntline dubbed him 'Buffalo Bill' and made him a popular hero. The highly successful Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show, which Cody organized in 1883, played to audiences in the East and in Europe, and featured Cody, Annie Oakley, and - briefly - Sitting Bull"--W.M.
