Beschreibung:

Two shipyard-made presentation models, of George Washington Class Nuclear submarines. [Groton, Conn.: c. 1959-60.] The two made-to-scale shipyard-made, full hull models, one chrome-plated bronze, the other cast bronze, Lengths 270mm and 245mm. Provenance: War Museum. The George Washington Nuclear submarines were commissioned from 1957, adapted from the Skipjack Class design, with the addition of a 130 foot section midships containing 16 Polaris nuclear missiles. This was the first time that submarines were armed with nuclear weapons. The escalating arms race between the US and Russia in the 1950s and 60s put nuclear submarines in the forefront of Nuclear strategy, since they could remain undetected in deep water and move around relatively easily, creating a deadly threat to the enemy. With the development of the Polaris missile in the late 1950s, the SLBM could accurately hit a target 1500 miles away. Throughout the 1960s the Polaris armed submarine fleet was the principal tool of US Nuclear deterrence. These two models were displayed at The Intrepid Sea Air Space Museum from 1995-2007.
