Cast shipyard model of the third US Nuclear powered submarine to be built. [Groton, Connecticut: c.1957.] A heavy cast aluminum shipyard made desk top presentation full hull model of the USN Skate, with conning tower and antennae with its cast iron stand, the model painted in brown, grey and green, stand lettered "USS Skate" on each side. A few small knocks and chipping of the original paint. Length 295mm, height 140mm; Together with two other shipyard made desk top presentation models of Skate Class submarines, in cast bronze and chrome-painted bronze, full hull models of the late 1950s, each with mounting pins on their base. Provenance: War Museum. A fine model of the USS Skate SSN 578, the lead vessel in the Skate Class of Nuclear Submarines, the Us Navy's first production run of nuclear subs, and part of the new era of submarine power and deterrent in the Cold War against Russia. In structure they evolved from the Tang class with the propulsion plants being nuclear, and derived from the USS Nautilus. She was the third US Nuclear submarine to be commissioned, and the first submarine to make a completely submerged crossing of the Atlantic. In August 1959 she was the second submarine to reach the North Pole, and the first to break through the ice to the surface at the North Pole. The keel was laid down at Groton in July 1955, and she was launched on May 1957, decommissioned in 1986, and recycled in 1995. All three of these models were on exhibit at The Intrepid Sea Air Space Museum in New York City, 1995-2007.
