A desk top solid chromed bronze submarine model. [Shipyard-Built, Vallejo, California; c. 1948.] A shipyard model of USN Tiru, solid chromed bronze construction, with fine detail of the deck layout, on two bronze supports with a heavy wooden base. Length of model. 335mm. (14 inches): Together with a large embroidered baize wardroom game-table covering, lettered "USS Tiru SS-416", with the ships insignia. 1580 x 1740mm. (62 x 70 inches.)Provenance: The War Museum. Exhibited at the Intrepid Sea Air and Space Museum, 1995-2007. A fine shipyard model of the Tiru, made up as a desk top presentation model probably for its first Captain. The Tiru was laid down in April 1944 at Vallejo California, as part of the Balao class of submarines, but remained uncompleted for 3 years due to the curtailment of the submarine building program. In 1947 the Tiru was completed with some changes in design, to incorporate some of the new technologies available.
