Builder's Master Pattern Model of the USS Nautilus; Chrome-plated solid bronze Presentation model, and three other items of related ephemera. [Groton, Conn.: c.1954.] A fine collection of items relating to the USS Nautilus, comprising; 1. The Original cased Builder's Master Pattern Model, scale 1:250, an exact copy of the upper portion the submarines hull and conning tower. In its fitted case. Length of model 320mm. 12.5 inches. The case 110 x 390 x 75mm. 2. Chrome-plated solid bronze Presentation Model of the USS Nautilus, mounted on a wooden plinth. Length of model 315mm. 3. A commemorative bronze medal celebrating the launch of the USS Nautilus in 1954, issued in Groton, by General Dynamics and presented to W.Paselev, in its original presentation sleeve; and another submarine medal from Newport News. 4. A section of deck planking recovered from the USS Nautilus after she was refitted at Portsmouth Naval Yard either in 1960 or 1964. Provenance: War Museum. The USS Nautilus was the first nuclear powered submarine, one of the great advancements in military technology of the 20th century, allowing submarines to travel submerged and undetected around the world, the ultimate deterrent to an enemy, unseen and deadly. Construction on the Nautilus began in 1952, and was launched in 1954. In 1958 she was the first vessel to cross the Arctic Ocean, and reach the North Pole, but did not surface. The submarine served with distinction, and was decommissioned in 1980, and it is now one of the principal exhibits at the Submarine Museum in Groton, Conn. This Grouping was exhibited at The Intrepid sea Air Space Museum in New York City from 1995 to 2007.
