Toovey purchased many of the books from the library of the late Earl of Gosford in 1878. Included were works obtained from the libraries formed by Renouard, Hanrott, Butler, Bishop of Lichfield, Sir M.M. Sykes, Heber, Hibbert, Libri and Solar.
