Beschreibung:

Large collection of hundreds of envelopes sent to Palestine from the Russian Empire, USA, and other places. Most envelopes were used, most probably, to send donations. Late 19th century and first decades of 20th century. Large collection of envelopes with postal ink-stamps and various stamps. Among them: * Envelopes addressed to Rabbi Shmuel Salant, rabbi and leader of the Jerusalemite Ashkenazi congregation. The envelopes were used for sending donations to Jerusalem, and were sent from different towns in the Russian Empire in the late 19th and early 20th century (ca. 1897-1908). Some envelopes are sealed with wax seals of the towns of origin – from Rēzekne (nowadays in Latvia), Rokiškis (presently in north-east Lithuania), Jelgava (now in Latvia), Kazan, Odessa, and other towns. One envelope is ink-stamped with the stamp of "Beit Va'ad HaKlali LeAdat HaAshkenazim BeYerushalayim". * Many envelopes sent to the United Charity Institutions of Jerusalem (United appeal of Talmud-Torah "Etz Haim" and "Bikur Cholim" Hospital); numerous envelopes are official envelopes printed "United Charity Institutions of Jerusalem". Most envelopes were sent to Jerusalem from various cities in the United States in the 1920s. * Two envelopes stamped with wax stamps: one sent from Uruguay to Jerusalem, and one sent from Jerusalem. * And more. Total of approx.560 envelopes. Size and condition vary.
