Nearly all of the glass plates are Civil War subjects, many are staged studio shots with Julian himself dressed in various union uniforms with various other props and a few other human models all taking up poses for paintings he wished to complete. A few are of large Civil War paintings, likely by Scott and a couple are an on site photo of bolder strewn hillside, quite likely Little Roundtop at Gettysburg, Pa. There are three negatives of Native American women in traditional Southeastern dress, likely Cherokee. One image is of his studio with wonderfully eclectic collection of artifacts and paintings including many of his oils hanging on the wall with both Civil War and American Indian subjects, items such as Civil War drum, collection of hats, including one with human skull under it, Indian blankets and much more. Several of the Civil War subjects are from the war including a portrait of Gen. McClellan. Also includes a wonderful studio portrait of a young African American Union Drummer Boy. Most of the larger negatives are collotype and most of the smaller are early glass plate silver gelatin. An interesting collection, detailing how this important artist worked.
