Collection of indentures, legal agreements, obligations alienations, recoveries etc. relating to Robert Aske (a later member of the family and namesake of the leader of the Pilgrimage of Grace), the Tempest family (Robert and Anthony Tempest, a major Yorkshire family), John Welbury, Thomas Patterson, Sir William Pickering and other families and several grants by Tobie Matthew, bishop of Durham, later archbishop of York, 1544?-1648, and concerning the bargain and sale of various properties in Hartlepool, Sheraton, Hesleden Hall, Brasterton (near Darlington), ?Holmestede etc. mostly in Durham, a few in Yorkshire, Ds.s., manuscripts on vellum, folds, some with creasing, soiling and staining, others fine or in good condition, v.s., v.d. 1536-1602 (c. 75 pieces). *** Most of the documents are records of purchases of land and property by gentlemen from Yorkshire and Durham. Tempest, who is mentioned in several documents is described as being "late of highe Treason attaynted and convicted... at the tyme of his late Rebellion."
