Approximately 100 letters, documents and paper items, recording the service of Attorney Arnold Spaer as an interpreter in the British Army during WWII. Baghdad, 1942 (several items from 1943). English. Some German, Arabic and Hebrew. * Approximately 50 letters and drafts, most handwritten and some typewritten, sent to and from Spaer during his service in Baghdad. Most of the correspondence was exchanged with acquaintances and family members in Palestine and some with military officials, colleagues and others. Most of the original envelopes are enclosed with the letters. * 20 tickets for movies and other entertainment events in Baghdad. Postage stamps and ink-stamps appear on the verso of most tickets. * Three absence authorizations from the army base, two handwritten and one typewritten, given to Spaer during his service. Two bear the stamp of the camp: "35 Rest Camp". * Three paper napkins, placed on the table at festive meals in the Baghdad Jewish hospital (hospital named after Meir Elias), in 1942. Two from Rosh Hashanah and one from Erev Yom Kippur. One bears a handwritten inscription (English), noting the time and place of the meal. * Six black and white photographs, documenting a visit of the soldiers in a date palm orchard near Baghdad. Five are dated on their verso: August 31, 1942, and four are dated by hand. Stamped on verso: "A. Abbosh & Co". * More items. Arnold Spaer (1919-2011) was born in Danzig. By vocation an attorney, he was the assistant of the military governor of Jerusalem, Dov Yosef, during the War of Independence. He immigrated with his family to Tel Aviv in 1934 and began studying law at the Government School of Law in Jerusalem and finished his residency in the office of Attorney Dov Yosef (military governor of Jerusalem during the War of Independence). During WWII, Spaer enlisted to the British Army and served as a VCO (Viceroy’s Commissioned Officer) with the British Indian military forces in Baghdad, Cairo, Libya and other places. During the War of Independence he served as assistant to Dov Yosef. Most of the letters and documents are arranged in a cardboard binder, and are divided with handwritten notes (English). Some letters were sent by Spaer during the time he lived in Palestine. Size and condition vary. Overall good-fair condition. See items 52, 58 and 275.
