Title: Collection of San Francisco Opera Company Photographs Inscribed to the President of the Opera Association Author: Place: San Francisco Publisher: Date: 1945 - 1956 Description: 1945-1956 Collection of San Francisco Opera Company Inscribed Photographs of Stars and Founder Gaetano Merola to the President of the Opera Association. Collection includes: A framed black and white portrait photograph by A. Laviosa of New York with their studio stamp of Gaetano Merola (1881-1953), dynamic founder of this opera company, warmly inscribed below the photograph on the mount to Kenneth Monteagle and his wife Lucille in 1946 in "...remembrance of our pleasant association with appreciation and friendship..."; with a group of 15 framed black and white professional press photographs by various studios, inscribed by each opera star to Monteagle, including: George Cehanovsky, Paul Breisach, Pietro Cimara, Charles Kullman, Giuseppe Valdengo, Herta Glaz, Florence Quartararo, Sara Menkes, Set Svanholm, Kurt Baum and others; with 2 similar additional press photographs, unsigned and unidentified; and 8 older large format studio portraits, perhaps of Mrs. Monteagle and of herself and admirers, with one being a colorized print from Iral Hills Studio 5th Ave. New York; Kenneth Monteagle (1891-1973) was a member of a prominent San Francisco family and former president of both the San Francisco Opera Association and the Symphony Association. (1973 Monterey Peninsula Herald, CA obituary); Merola portrait larger format, with a very large mount-matting, 18 1/4" x 13 1/2" size framed and lacking its glass - right side of photograph with white powder residue, mount cardstock darkened, soiled, inscription clear; most of the opera stars' portrait frames with their glass, most of the signatures and sentiments legible and decipherable, some wear and rubbing to the plain black wooden frames; an interesting collection, a glimpse into the post-Second World War world of opera, at a time of formation, growth and vibrancy for this eminent American opera company and its founder. Donated by Certain Books, Westhampton, New York. Lot Amendments Condition: Condition good. Item number: 243349
