COLOM, Jacob Aertsz (1600-1673). Colomne Ardante de la mer M é diterran é e . Amsterdam: Jacob Colom, 1671. Tenth edition with French text; all editions are rare . The first edition in Dutch appeared in 1632, followed by the first editions in French and English ( The Upright Fyrie Colomne ) a year later. As Koeman points out ‘thousands of copies were circulated’ during the period of Colom’s intense rivalry with Willem Blaeu but ‘ only a score have survived . Colom’s pilot books, as far as is traceable, are fewer in number than Blaeu’s’ (IV, p.120). cf. Koeman IV, pp. 134-135 (table). Small folio (451 x 277mm). Engraved title, 14 charts comprising one folding general map of the eastern Mediterranean, plus 10 double and 3 single-page charts, as called for by register on final page, most engraved but one woodcut, further engraved and woodcut maps in text, also woodcut measuring instruments, plans and profiles (waterstaining to some text and map margins, title and preliminaries with wear to page edges, folding map with slight losses at bottom margin, map of Dalmatia [f.80] with two internal tears, I4 short at margins and possibly supplied, some edge tears and repairs, guards renewed). 20th-century half vellum, uncut.
