COLONIAL AUTHORS]. MATHER, COTTON (1663-1728). Autograph manuscript of a sermon or devotional essay, headed "Eph[esian]s.I.7. In Whom We Have Redemption," [Boston], August 1701. 4 pages, 8vo, very closely written (as usual with Mather), slight fraying affecting two lines of text, modern protective paper covers. A working manuscript (probably incomplete at end), with numerous corrections by Mather, opening "Redemption! Is it possible for fallen and sinful man to hear of a more glorious thing!...All ye chosen people of God are fallen into a wretched state..." Mather's sermons, like others of the period, are typically written in a remarkably small, dense hand on small pages to be held in the hand for reading from the pulpit. Mather assisted his father, Increase, as preacher at the Second Church in Boston from 1685 to 1723 -- MATHER, SAMUEL (1706-1785). Autograph manuscript sermon on 6 Gal.9, "And let us not be weary in well-doing, for in due season we shall reap," [Boston], June 1736, 4 pages, 8vo. -- MATHER, INCREASE.
