COLT, Samuel (1814-1862), American industrialist, arms manufacturer . Autograph letter signed ("Saml.Colt") to Hon. Lucien Cameron, with postscript signed with initials ("S.C."), Hartford, Conn., 9 December 1861. 1 full page, 4to, integral blank, endorsement on verso. Fine. AN UNCOMMON WAR-DATE LETTER OF THE INVENTOR OF THE REVOLVER A letter of recommendation penned by Colt in the early months of the Civil War and only a month before the inventor's death: "Allow me to introduce to you the bearer of this Mr.McIntire, who was once connected with my establishment in the capacity of Mechanical Draughtsman. Mr. McIntire is desirous of obtaining a situation under the Government or connected with its affairs; and if you can assist him to some responsible position you will confer a favor on one who merits a higher office than I have it in my power, at this time, to confer." In his postscript, Colt adds "this letter may be presented with my warmest recommendation to Genl. Ripley of Ordnance Dept or Hon Gideon Wells [Secretary of the Navy]." Colt had perfected the revolver in 1836, launching a series of frequently improved rifles and pistols. His Model 1860 had become the official sidearm of the Union Army, with over 100,000 in use, but a design for the Navy, the Model 1861 pistol, failed to secure significant orders from the Union Navy.
