COLTON, Joseph H. (1800-1893), publisher. Colton's Map of the Oil District of Ohio and West Virginia. Second Edition. New York: J.H. Colton, 1865. Colored lithographed map (976 x 810 mm). (Few splits along folds, few chips at edges). Original blind-stamped cloth portfolio (158 x 106 mm), gilt-lettered on front cover, lettered in blind on rear cover (some very light wear at extremities). Second edition of Colton's scarce map of the Ohio and West Virginia Oil Districts, published the same year as the first edition. The present map is not listed by Giddens in The Beginnings of the Petroleum Industry . The first such record he lists is F.W. Beer's Atlas of the Oil Region of Pennsylvania , also published in 1865. No copies of Colton's maps of the oil districts have appeared at auction in at least thirty years, according to ABPC. Phillips America , pp. 630 and 1067.
