Title: Colton's General Atlas, Containing One Hundred and Eighty Steel Plate Maps and Plans, on One Hundred and Nineteen Imperial Folio Sheets, Accompanied by One Hundred and Sixty-Eight Pages Letter-Press Descriptions, Geographical, Statistical, and Historical, by Richard S. Fisher, M.D. Author: Colton, G[eorge] Woolworth Place: New York Publisher: J. H. Colton Date: 1862 Description: With 110 hand-colored maps and plans (7 are double-page), plus insets, 5 other single-page maps not colored, all on 102 map-sheets; a steel-engraved plate before the title page and a double-page hand-colored engraving of the major mountains and rivers of the world, after the title page. (Folio) 17½x15, original quarter brown sheep and cloth, lettered in gilt, marbled page edges and endpapers. Colton was one of the pre-eminent American map publishing firms in the mid-nineteenth century, which began publishing maps in the 1830's. Although listed as a single page map, a double page map of Kansas and Nebraska appears. It shows county development along the Missouri but little western detail. Texas appears on a double page map with insets of the Northern Part of Texas, Sabine Lake, and Galveston Bay. California map with inset of San Francisco. A map of Washington and Oregon with strange Washington configuration, extending across much of Montana, Idaho and slightly beyond. Single page city plans include Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, Savannah/Charleston, Louisville/New Orleans, Pittsburgh/Cincinnati, St. Louis/Chicago, London (black and white), and Paris (black and white).
