Colton Date: 1862 Description: Lithographed map, hand-colored. 93.5x70 cm (36¾x27½"), folding into gilt-lettered cloth covers 16x10.5 cm (6¼x4¼"), leaf of ads for Colton's maps on inside of front cover. . Influential map of the far west, with large inset at upper right, "Map of the Atlantic Ocean Showing parts of the Eastern & Western Continents," which shows virtually all of North and South America as well as large swathes of Europe and Africa. Warren Heckrotte notes: "The representation of the Nez Perce and Salmon River mines is almost identical to Lowell's map of this area, also published in 1862 - one of them copied from the other. The map also includes Arizona and parts of Dakota and Nebraska. This map and Colton's New Railroad & County Map...,1862, which extends east from the eastern border of this map are from the same plate of the United States.
