Colton Date: 1862 Description: Lithographed map, hand-colored. 80x94/5 cm (21½x37¼"), backed with linen & sectioned for folding into original cloth covers bearing the printed label of G.F. Crutchley, London, 22.5x13.5 cm (9x5¼"). The eastern half of the United States in the second year of the Civil War, with railroads and many other features. In the lower border is a printed paper label explaining the color designations of the map: red for "Free or Non-Slaveholding States" with a population of 18 million; yellow for "Border Slave States" with a population of 3 million; and green for "Seceded or Confederate States" with a population of 10 million, of which 3.5 million were slaves. In addition to the Crutchley label on the cover, there is a printed leaf affixed to the inside of the cover, listing the members of the Federal and Confederate Administrations.
