Lot of 39 manuscript and partially printed documents pertaining to the resources of the Confederate cavalry in the Army of Tennessee, including battalions from Alabama, Georgia, and Mississippi, June 1863-April 1865. Collection consists of morning reports, invoices of stores and other ordnance documents, tri-monthly reports, armament and ammunition reports, medical certificates, appointments, receipts, orders concerning transfers and leaves of absence, and more. Some unfilled, though the majority are completed and signed by Confederate politicians and military officers including Charles Armistead, David T. Blakey, Edward Bird James Hagan, Francis Strother Lyon, and John Withers. Of particular note is a large, hand-drawn diagram, 24.25 x 16 in., showing the structure of Union General William Tecumseh Sherman's army in South Carolina. Boldly titled, "Organization / Federal Army in South Carolina - Maj. Genl. Wm. T. Sherman Com'd'g," breaks down each wing by corps, division, brigade, and regiment, with the commander of each unit and available rations noted as well. Amendments have been made concerning transferred units and changes of command, with an inscribed estimate reading, "average 1200 guns to a Brigade." Notations concerning Judson Kilpatrick's cavalry command listed below. Other highlights include: Armistead, Charles G. (ca 1840-1918). Confederate colonel, 12th Mississippi Cavalry, later the 16th Confederate Cavalry. Partially printed DS, "C G Armistead / Col Comm 1st Brig," 1p, 9.25 x 7.625 in., Gadsden, AL. October 22, 1864. Ordnance requisition submitted by Armsitead for arms and ammunition, including 100 cartridge boxes and 84 rifles. Bird, Edward (ca 1840-1893). Confederate colonel, 5th Georgia Cavalry. DS, 1p, 13.5 x 9.25 in., "In the Field." March 17, 1865. Manuscript report titled, "Morning Report of the Effective Strength of Anderson's Cavalry Brigade," listing the number of available officers, enlisted men, horses, guns, pistols, and sabers available to the cavalry units under the command of General Robert H. Anderson, who was wounded at the time when Bird prepared this report. Blakey, David T. (ca 1833-1902). Confederate colonel serving under Brigadier General William W. Allen, 1st Alabama Cavalry; wounded at the Battle of Dandridge (1864). DS, "D. T. Blakey Col Comdg," 1p, 7.75 x 8 in., "In the Field North Carolina." March 25, 1865. Blakey endorses a morning report prepared in the field for "Hagan's Brigade." Cuyler, Richard M. (dates). Confederate officer tasked with the command of the Macon Arsenal, 1862-1865. Incomplete ALS, "Rich. M. Cuyler / Lt. Col. Comd," 1p only, 7.75 x 10 in., "C.S. Arsenal, Macon, Ga." July 12, 1864. Addressed to General Joseph Wheeler. Cuyler writes concerning the manufacture and transport of "Texas saddles," estimating that he can "make 100 per week." Hagan, James (1822-1901), Irish immigrant married to Bettie Davis Oliver, daughter of prominent Alabama politician Samuel White Oliver; Colonel, 3rd Alabama Cavalry. Collection of morning reports and tri-monthly returns, including partially printed DS, "James Hagan Col Commanding," 1p, 23.25 x 9 in., Matthew's Bluff, SC. January 24, 1865. "Tri-Monthly Return of Hagan's Brigade of Cavalry," listing the number of present and absent officers and enlisted men in the cavalry units under Hagan's command. In the "Remarks," column, Hagan notes that "25 Officers and 420 Enlisted men [are] Prisoner[s of] War." Lyon, Francis Strother (1800-1882). Alabama attorney and politician who represented his state in both the United States and Confederate Congresses. ALS, 1p, 7.75 x 9.75 in., "Steamer Cherokee / near Mobile." February 18, 1861. Addressed to Alabama Senator George Goldthwaite (1810-1879) concerning the appointment of Robert M. Campbell and Francis Y. Gaines as first lieutenants. Gaines would later serve as a major, 3rd Alabama Cavalry, while Campbell received a captain's commission with the 1st Alabama Light Artillery. Condition: Condition
