ALS, 2p, with integrated cover addressed to D.C.E. Brady, Esq. / Sanders Store P.O. / Rockbridge Co., Va., with two cent CSA stamp postmarked at Richmond, letter dated at Richmond, May 30, 1863. The writer, whose signature appears to read Jos. G. Dell says that all of Brady's letters have reached him via a "Flag of Truce boat" and then updates Brady on war news: "Grant has fallen back from Vicksburg to fortify -- so the Yankees reported its capture prematurely." Dell mentions that his stock in a blockade-running firm has more than doubled from the $500/share he originally paid, and he plans to purchase $5,000 in stock in a new importing operation, saying that some investors have enjoyed returns of up to 800%. He also recommends investing in gold, speculating it may rise from $6.50 to $10.00. He goes on to discuss prices of liquor in Richmond and notes that they have "plenty of strawberries and milk in these hard times" and tells his friend an amusing story about falling in the river while fishing, "much to the amusement of the operatives on the Gun Boat who witnessed the whole affair." Provenance: The M. Clifford (Cliff) and Lynne B. Young Confederate Blockade Runner Collection Condition: Back page/postal cover with a few tears and missing a small section. Text pages very good and fully legible.
