During the Battle of Bull Run, it became evident that the Confederate national flag, The Stars and Bars, was almost indistinguishable from the Union's Stars and Stripes, causing confusion on the battlefield. A revised battle flag designed by General Pierre G.T. Beauregard was adopted by the Confederacy and subsequently became the generally-recognized symbol of the South. Provenance: J.
