Beschreibung:

Conrad, Joseph AN OUTCAST OF THE ISLANDS. LONDON: T. FISHER UNWIN, 1896 8vo, first edition of the author's second book, presentation copy inscribed by the author to Marguerite Poradowska ("A chère Tante Marguerite | L'Auteur. | 4th Mars. 1896.") on front free endpaper, title-page in red and black, original dark green vertically ribbed cloth lettered in gilt on spine, top edge gilt, collector's folding box, hinges split, extremities bumped For a note on Marguerite Poradowska see lot 196. Cagle notes that the English publication was '...on or about 4 March 1896... Wise records the publication date as 16 March, Aubry as 4 March, and the latter agrees with Conrad's note on the manuscript.' Two early presentation copies are noted by Cagle: one to his wife (dated 27 February) and one to Mrs Sanderson (dated 4 March). This copy is therefore inscribed on the probable day of publication and dates from the period that letters between Conrad and his 'aunt' are missing.
