First English Edition, published a few days after the American. PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed by the author on front free endpaper: "Robert Garnett from his friend Joseph Conrad. 1923." The recipient was the brother of Edward Garnett, who recommended the publication of Almayer's Folly , greatly encouraged Conrad's writing, and became his close friend. Smith, p. 93.
