In a letter, thought to be dated 23 February 1895, Conrad presumably makes reference to an instalment of Poradowska's novel published within a periodical: “…To explain why I have not yet thanked you for Marylka, I must tell you that I was in bed, in rather poor shape, at the home of my friend Hope, while your book awaited me in London… My dear and good Aunt, you have mangled this poor book. And Brunetiere [the literary critic and editor of the Revue des Deux Mondes], who is alone responsible, is, moreover, an imbecile. But what remains is very delightful…” (see CL, I, p. 202)
