Philadelphia, 1848. 8vo, engraved allegorical title (tiny stain at top edges of a few leaves), original blindstamped brown cloth (rebacked, preserving portions of original spine). Half red morocco gilt slipcase. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY 'THE LITTLE GIANT' in ink on front flyleaf: "Presented to Mr. C. Evangelides by his friend S.A. Douglas, July 17 1854." A very popular compilation, widely used as a government manual. The young man to whom it is inscribed by Senator Douglas is Christy Evangelides, a Greek orphan raised and educated in the houshold of Julia Ward Howe, the author. Provenance : William H. Townsend (noted Lincoln collector), bookplate; Justin G. Turner, bookplate.
