CONWAY, Hugh - "Überall tiefste Finsternis. Roman-Übersetzung vom Französischen ins Deutsche von Arno Albert". Verviers, November 1908. German manuscript on paper, c. 21 x 13,5 cm, cont. dark blue half leather by H. Adam Verviers , gilt titled spine (tanned, edges rubbed), marbl. endpapers, in limp slipcase, [2]-215-[3] pp., expertly written. In good condition.
Fair copy of an apparently unpublished German trsl. of the popular crime story “Called Back” (1883) of Hugh Conway (pen name of Frederick John Fargus, Bristol 1847-1885). The German version was made from the French trsl. by Bernard Pauncefote (“Hors des ténèbres”, Brussels 1885). “Called Back” established the formula and format of the Victorian "shilling shocker". “This sensational story of murder, amnesia, Siberian exile, political assassination and detection made a tremendous hit. It was translated all over Europe, a dramatized version ran for a year, and the novel sold over 350,000 copies in four years” (Sutherland, Victorian Fiction, p. 222).
