COOK, James, Partly printed document signed ("Jas Cook"), aboard the 'Pembroke', 27 May, 1758. 1 page, large 4 o, some wear and minor paper loss at the borders, evidence of repair along center horizontal fold, Cook's signature is unaffected. Cook signs as Master of the 'Pembroke' -- the document is also signed by Captain Simcoe as well as the pursor and the Botswain. The document is a discharge certificate for Able Seaman John Syvrile who has served aboard the Pembroke for nearly a year. Endorsed on the verso and dated 9 April 1761. Four other autograph items are also included: -- BYRON, John, and CARTERET, Philip, British naval commanders on Cook's voyages . Printed document signed ("J. Byron"), as Captain aboard the 'Augusta', 22 October, 1753. 1 page, 4 o, normal scalloping, cancelled with an "X" on the recto and also signed by the ship's Master, Purser and Botswain. Being the official discharge of Carteret from the Augusta "for reasons of preferment in the Vanguard," and containing a three line autograph endorsement and signature of Carteret on the verso. John Byron, grandfather of the poet Byron and Commander of the Dolphin on Cook's 2nd Voyage, signs the document discharging Philip Carteret, who later became his Lieutenant on the Dolphin, and eventually commanded the Swallow. -- BURNEY, James, British Admiral and writer. Autograph document signed ("Jas Burney"), no place, 14 November, no year. 1 page 3 x 2.5 inches pasted to larger, heavier stock. Burney who sailed with Cook on his 2nd and third Voyages and who later wrote some highly successful books using his experiences with Cook as inspiration makes a libary request for Charlevois' General History of Japn requesting "Paris Edition 4 o 1736." -- HOWE, Richard, 1st Lord of the British Admiralty . Partial Document Signed ("Howe"), on board ship at Hamoze, 28 January, 1762. Approximately 5 x 2 in. pasted down to a backing sheet. Included is a 7 x 9 in portait engraving of Cook, Anson, and Byron. (5)
