COOKE, Layton. A Series of Statistical Charts shewing the Fluctuations in Quantity and Value of the Products of the Soil with various ascertainments obviously influential on the Husbandry of the British Empire founded on Official and other Authentic Documents . London: Published by the Author, n.d [1827?]. Oblong 2 o (406 x 548 mm). 15 hand-colored engraved charts. Contemporary half morocco, front cover with morocco lettering-piece (front cover detached, rubbed). VERY RARE FIRST EDITION. According to Cooke's introduction, "The following charts facilitate the arrival at equitable conclusions, without discursive reading or tedious calculation; and being composed of a concentrated delineation of facts, the mind, by a transient view, unbiassed by obtrusive commentary, is directed to an accurate knowledge of various Subjects of considerable importance..." The fifteen charts show the national debt, prices of various crops (corn, whey), imports and exports, duties, taxation, etc. The years of war or peace are shown at the foot of each plate except for plate 14, "Provincial Statistcs." An early hand has annotated the first two plates in pencil, suggesting further charts that would be of use. Cooke was referenced by the great Charles Joseph Minand in his Des tableaux graphiques et des cartes figuratives (Paris, 1862): "In the beginning of the century, Layton Cooke published his great tables of the colored graphs representing the annual prices of corn in the north of Europe, those of wool, of meat, of butter, etc." (trans. Dawn Finley 2003). Not in Kress or Goldsmith, and no copies in American Book Prices Current in at least 30 years.
