COOKERY AND MEDICINE. Booke of Cookery & other conceats . MANUSCRIPT VOLUME OF APPROXIMATELY 110 COOKERY RECIPES AND 600 MEDICAL RECIPES. First half of the 17th century. Folio (312x187mm), 115 leaves, including 5 blanks, paginated throughout. Written mostly by one very neat hand in brown ink, with contemporary additions in two or three other hands. Contemporary calf, panelled in blind (rubbed, split in spine). Provenance : Note on front fly-leaf 'Lond. 27th January 1698' in a later hand. The text is divided into six sections. I. Medicines used by the Countess of Oxford in her charitable works. II. 'A true coppy of such medicines wherewith Mistress Joan Ownstead daughter unto Mr. John Oliffe alderman of London hath cured and healed many forlorne and deadly diseases'. III and IV. Copy of a manuscript 'founde in the parsons study at Warlingham'. V. 'An excellent booke of playsters, salves, diet, drinkes, purgations, potions, &c' from Paracelsus, translated into English by Thomas Potter. 1583. VI. Prety conceates of cookery.
