Original purple muslin, printed paper labels on the spines (volume two covers nearly detached, spines a bit faded, labels chipped, one or two stains); modern quarter red morocco gilt slipcase. Provenance : Paul Fenimore Cooper (initials); Mrs. Fenimore Cooper (signature and inscription); Fenimore Cooper (signatures); annotations and corrections in the text in a near-contemporary hand. THE FAMILY COPY OF THE FIRST AMERICAN EDITION from the Fenimore Cooper family home Otsego Hall in Cooperstown (inscription on the front free endpaper), signed by a "Mrs. Fenimore Cooper" on the recto of the first blank, initialled by the author's son Paul Fenimore Cooper and signed by an early descendant "Fenimore Cooper" on the title-page of volume one.
