(Intermittent spotting throughout.) Original cherry muslin-backed drab paper boards, uncut (spines faded, labels a bit browned, boards a bit scuffed); modern quarter morocco gilt slipcase. Provenance : James Fenimore Cooper (signature); Susan Fenimore Cooper (signatures); Fenimore Cooper (signatures dated 1895); William Cooper (inscription). FIRST AMERICAN EDITION, THE AUTHOR'S COPY, SIGNED "J. Fenimore Cooper" on the title-page, and with further family association: signed by his daughter "Susan F. Cooper" on the front cover of each volume, in a 19th-century hand "Fenimore Cooper" on the front paste-down of each volume, and inscribed "Wm Cooper's" on the title-page of volume two.
