COOPER, James Fenimore. Ned Myers; or, A Life Before the Mast. Philadelphia: Lea and Blanchard, 1843.
COOPER, James Fenimore. Ned Myers; or, A Life Before the Mast. Philadelphia: Lea and Blanchard, 1843. 12 o (193 x 113 mm). 8pp. publishers' advertisements at the end. Original buff printed wrappers (front wrapper a bit dustsoiled, corners slightly curled); modern quarter red morocco slipcase. Provenance : James Fenimore Cooper (signature). "I AM YOUR OLD SHIPMATE, NED" (COOPER). FIRST AMERICAN EDITION. THE AUTHOR'S COPY, SIGNED by him "James Fenimore Cooper" on the front cover. Edward "Ned" Robert Myers (1793?-1849) first met Cooper aboard the Stirling during Cooper's voyage in 1806. After thirty-five years 'and a life at sea which he described as 'head gales, a head beat sea, sails sp[li?]t & spars carried away,' Ned wrote from Sailors Snug Harbor, Staten Island, asking if the novelist were the Cooper he remembered. The reply came: 'I am your old shipmate, Ned.' The two met, probably on 6 April 1843 in New York; and Cooper was so impressed by the weather-beaten tar's adventures that he took Ned to Cooperstown for a five-month visit and told his story..." (Beard IV 383). BAL 3908; Sabin 16484; Spiller and Blackburn 38.
