(Marginal tears with loss to the first three pages not affecting the text, one or two spots.) Original pink-brown printed wrappers (one corner torn with loss); modern quarter red morocco gilt slipcase. Provenance : Susan Augusta Fenimore Cooper (signature). FIRST EDITION, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR'S DAUGHTER "Susie" on the front wrapper. Cooper writes in the Preface : "The writer has not sought this discussion. It has been forced on him by his assailants, who must now face the consequences..." BAL 3904; Howes C-746; Sabin 16415; Spiller and Blackburn 37. [ With :] BURGES, Hon. Tristam (1770-1853). Battle of Lake Erie with Notices of Commodore Elliot's Conduct in that Engagement. Boston: B.B. Mussey, 1839. 12 o (182 x 115 mm). 3 engraved diagrams (one or two spots). (Some occasional spotting.) Original brown straight-grained cloth decorated in blind, ruled and lettered in gilt on the spine. Provenance : Henry Frederick Phinney (signature). INSCRIBED BY COOPER'S SON-IN-LAW "H.F. Phinney" on the title-page. "After the death of Elihu Phinney, Sr., in 1813, his sons Henry and Elihu maintained and extended his publishing and bookselling interests in Cooperstown. The Phinneys had taught Cooper to set type as a child. Their stereotype foundry, established in 1820, was one of the earliest in the United States...For Cooper, they published The American Democrat , The Chronicles of Cooperstown , and The Battle of Lake Erie and co-published the third edition of The History of the Navy . Elihu's son Henry...married [Cooper's daughter] Caroline Martha Cooper [in 1849 and] entered the firm in 1839." (Beard). Sabin (9232) records two copies of this response to Cooper's account of the Battle of Lake Eerie, as presented in his History of the Navy , issued separately in Philadelphia and Providence in 1839, but not this Boston issue.
