CHAMPAGNE "The decades of the 1950s and 1960s each produced a quartet of really good vintages which still, if well kept, will appeal to...[those]...who prefer their champagne calm and characterful like a mature Montrachet.. Although Moët's Dom Pérignon was launched pre-war, it was in the post-war period that that these champagnes started to take off with Roederer Cristal (in 1945) and Taittinger's Comtes de Champagne in 1952, coinciding with Bernard de Nonancourt's Laurent Perrier Grand Siècle, a novel blend of three vintages." MB, Vintage Wine This collection offers an array of great Champagne Houses and their deluxe cuvées. In addition to original releases are a fine offering of late-disgorged bottles; offering both the complexity of long ageing with the freshness of recent disgorging. Both Krug's "Collection" and Dom Pérignon's "Oenothèque" series feature here. The complexity of Champagne's terroir is often diminished by the intricate blending of each house's style; but a few individual vineyards stand out amongst the rest. Krug's Clos du Mesnil and its neighbour le Mesnil produced in great years by Salon are unique in their complexity. In addition a few bottles of Bollinger's Vieilles Vignes Françaises, a wine made from vines with original French rootstocks have been included in this exciting offering. Perhaps the most intriguing of Champagne releases are those of Taittinger Collection. (Artist Series) Conceived by Claude Taittinger in the 1970s they bring together both the art of the winemaker and the artists of our generation each expressing the influences of Champagne of our times. Great Rosés are also present here with Krug, Taittinger Comtes de Champagne, Veuve Clicquot and Dom Pérignon all showcasing their differing styles. RSB We are grateful to Richard Juhlin for his permission to reproduce tasting notes and other information from his book 4000 Champagnes published in France by Editions Flammarion INSERT CHAMPAGNE MAP AS QUARTER PAGE Vintage 1955 **** A large crop harvested around the end of September and early October. Very good quality, firm, with refreshing acidity. MB Vintage Wine. Cordon Rouge--Vintage 1955 Mumm 1 magnum per lot
