Hastily gobled up in five Moneths travells in France, Savoy, Italy...Helvetia alias Switzerland, some parts of Germany and the Netherlands...dispersed to the nourishment of the Travelling Members of this Kingdom. London: W[illiam] S[tansby, for the author], 1611. 4 o (206 x 154 mm). Elaborate engraved allegorical title by William Hole 4 engraved plates (3 folding), 2 engraved text illustrations, many woodcut initials, and head-pieces, with the errata leaf. (Engraved title cropped, a few minor repairs.) 19th-century straight-grained red morocco gilt, central gilt coat-of-arms of Sir Henry Harben on sides, gilt edges. Provenance : Dogmersfield Library (bookplate); Henry Devenish Harben (bookplate and binding); acquired from Arthur Freeman, 1967. Coryate spent five months wandering through western Europe, largely on foot and horseback, visiting 45 cities and covering, by his reckoning, 1975 miles. His naive narrative is notable for its extravagant style: "there has probably never been another such combination of learning and unconscious buffoonery" (Pforzheimer). Cox, I, p.98; Keynes Donne 70; Pforzheimer 218; Pirie, John Donne 74; STC 5808.
