Antwerp: Hieronymous Verdussen, 1617. 4° (236 x 172mm). Large engraving of Jerusalem on title, 3 engraved plates and 57 engravings in the text, some full-page (including 5 full-page maps), 5 folding printed tables at the end. (Without blank ninth leaf, lightly browned.) Chestnut morocco by Douglas Cockerell, dated 1904, red edges. Provenance : Jean-Baptiste Colbert (Baluze's slightly shaved inscription at head of title 'Bibliothecae Colbertinae'); Walter Bowman (18th-century signature on title-verso); EDWARD GIBBON (printed book-label, removed from an earlier binding); Walter Sneyd (small circular bookplate); C.W. Dyson Perrins (oval leather bookplate, sale Sotheby's, 5 November 1946, lot 492, £32 to Foyle). FIRST EDITION, issue with the illustration of Jerusalem on title. 'Cotovicus travelled to Syria and the Holy Land in 1598, via Corfu, Zante, Crete, Rhodes and Cyprus. The illustrations contain maps, views and plans of buildings and monuments, including five full-page maps (Corfu, Crete, Morea, Cyprus and Rhodes). The work also contains long descriptions of Crete and Cyprus' (Blackmer). Brunet II, 331 'Ouvrage assez estimé et devenu rare'; Blackmer 416.
