First edition, the Streeter copy : “describes the basic form of government by which New England was settled and gives a short account of New England history from 1607 to 1622. Most of the grants later made of the territory in New England were by means of the Council. Winsor was inclined to attribute this book to Sir Ferdinando Gorges, ‘Father of English Colonization in America’ and the prime mover of the Council of New England” (Streeter). Scarce : according to records, only one other copy has sold at auction in the last 40 years. 4to (182 x 138 mm). [8], [17]; preserves initial blank, lacks terminal blank. Modern plum morocco, by European Bookbinding Co. Provenance : Signet Library (sold Sotheby’s 27 June 1960, lot 1581); Thomas W. Streeter (bookplate, his sale part II, Parke Bernet, 1967, lot 611).
