Couverture de danse Chilkat Tlingit, Côte Nord-Ouest, Alaska Epoque présumée: XIXe siècle Laine de chèvre des montagnes (trame), liber d'écorce de cèdre (chaîne), colorants, tendons, fil H. 104 cm - L. 170 cm Chilkat Tlingit dancing blanket, Nordwest Coast, Alaska H. 40.9 in - W. 66.9 in Provenance(s): - Collecté par Samual James Bell en Alaska en 1899 - Collection Shirley Standage, Aptos Californie - Quintana Galleries, Portland, Oregon - Donald Ellis Gallery, Dundas, Ontario - Collection privée, Potomac, MD (1996) - Collection privée française Les premiers visiteurs au début du XIXe siècle, furent très impressionnés lorsqu'ils découvrirent ces vêtements ou couvertures de danse portés par des notables au cours des cérémonies, accrochés dans les maisons ou sortant avec précaution des coffres en bois de cèdre. Les motifs hautement symboliques, présentant des visages sous des formes animales, se retrouvent dans des dispositions différentes sur toutes ces couvertures. La baleine ou le corbeau, par exemple, font partie du bestiaire usuel de ces couvertures. Celle-ci est dans un particulièrement bon état de fraicheur et de conservation, avec un camaïeu de couleurs très présent. CHILKAT TLINGIT DANCING BLANKET, NORDWEST COAST, ALASKA H. 40.9 in - W. 66.9 in The first visitors, in the early 19th century, were very impressed when they discovered these clothes or dance blankets worn by the leaders during ceremonies, hung in the houses or carefully pulled out of cedar chests. The highly symbolic patterns, representing faces with animal forms, are found in different layouts on all these covers. The whale or crow for example, are part of the usual bestiary of theses covers. The highly symbolic patterns of these blankets are found in a different layout on all the blankets. This one is in particular good condition, with a fresh cameo of colors.
