cover 1896 (23 Jan.), 1a. postcard written at "Rabai Mission, 15 miles from Mombasa" by Surgeon - Capt. L.L. Hinde, the appointed M.O. at Machakos, addressed to England, the vignette with "MOMBASA/A/JA 25/96" squared circle cancellation; slight staining; the message reads, "I am not at Doctoring yet having got temporary command of the troops protecting the 4 missions in this district. As the Arab Rebel chiefs are about and still giving trouble in fact an attack is expected any day; there are now Indian troops at Mombasa who have come over to 'hurry that dissolute chief (mbaruka) along' so I hope in a few days or weeks to be relieved and go up to Kikuyu where things have not been very quiet lately, and I am to act as transport officer till the Massai settle down or I am relieved. I would not be surprised if there is not some fun to be had in Africa yet. This is a fine country. Ain't I just glad to be under the old flag"
