Hubert Litchfield (bookplate); J.T. Chord (note from Charles Sessler stating provenance; his sale, Parke-Bernet, 9 April 1963, lot 89). FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING, with the earliest state of the advertisements. "From reading Battles and Leaders of the Civil War , from no actual experience save his own struggles and failures, came this realistic picture of war, its truth vouchsafed for by veterans; but more than this, an extraordinary study of the common man amid the turmoil, clamor and distortion typified by war... It sold amazingly, and Crane rose to sudden fame.
