Routledge's New Sixpenny Toy Books].
London: George Routledge, [1866-1876]. 26 works in one volume. 4to (9 1/4 x 7 inches; 235 x 180 mm). Illustrations printed in colors from woodblocks by Edmund Evans after Walter Crane Contemporary half leather, upper cover titled in gilt "Walter Crane Picture Books", original wrappers bound in. Condition : a few slight chips at margins of wrappers but generally very nice throughout; binding scuffed, hinges rubbed. an impressive collection of these landmark picture books by one of the greatest illustrators of the period, offering a treasury of classic children’s literature : nursery rhymes, ABCs, fairy tales, etc. With these picture books Crane and Routledges ushered in what was to be the Victorian Golden Age of nursery books, paving the way for Kate Greenaway Randolph Caldecott and others. This collection, containing all but three of Walter Crane titles in "Routledge's New Sixpenny Toy Books" series, includes 20 first printings: A Gaping-Wide-Mouth Waddling Frog (1866); The Old Courtier (1867); Annie and Jack in London (1869); The Fairy Ship (1870); This Little Pig went to Market (1870); King Luckboy's Party (1870); Noah's Ark Alphabet (1872); My Mother (1873); Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves (1873); The Three Bears (1873); Cinderella (1873); Valentine and Orson (1874); Puss in Boots (1874); Old Mother Hubbard (1874); The Absurd ABC (1874); Little Red Riding Hood (1875); Jack and the Beanstalk (1875); Bluebeard (1875); Baby's Own Alphabet (1875); Sleeping Beauty in the Wood (1876). The remaining titles are all early printings: Sing a Song of Sixpence (1870); The Multiplication Table in Verse (1870); Chattering Jack (1870); Grammar in Rhyme (1876); One Two Buckle My Shoe (1876); Adventures of Puffy (1876).
