CRAUFURD, Rev. Charles Henry Gregan -- Catalogue of the Very Choice Library of the Late Rev. C.H. Craufurd, Rector of Old Swinford, Worcestershire. London: Sotheby, Wilkinson and Hodge, 10 July 1876. 3 volumes bound in one, 8 o (209 x 140 mm). Later boards backed with green cloth, original wrappers bound in. Provenance : A.L. McLaughlin (bookplate). PRICED WITH BUYERS' NAMES in a contemporary hand, ruled in red. The last, posthumous, sale of Craufurd's library, containing highly important early printed books, such as the 1472 Mainz Latin Bible, the 1518 Aldine Greek Bible, the Strassburg 1480 Bidpai, Caxton's Dyctes, 1477, the 1527 Wynkyn de Worde Voragine (£24.10.0, £13.10.0, £87, £29 respectively, all to Quaritch), the four Shakespeare Folios, all bound by Bedford (£119 to Ellis, £42 to Nattali, £73 to Walford and £19 to Quaritch), Walton's Complete Angler, 1653-1676 (£100 to Sabin) and others. The total result was £6,229.17.6. There had been two previous sales, in 1854 and 1864 (see Pollard under Charles Henry Crawford). Sir John Simeon, the third Baronet, in 1856 was elected member of the Roxburghe Club, of which he owned a complete set of its publications up to 1868 (lots 1,814-1,858 and 2,083-2,126); his was an elevated "gentleman's library," ranging from the 1499 Hypneratomachia (£18.15.0 to Quaritch), The Brescia Dante, 1487 (£13.5.0 to Quaritch), a contemporary manuscript of Donne's Poems , and their first edition, (1633), with unpublished MS additions used by Simeon for the Philobiblon Society's edition of Donne's Unpublished Poems, to sixteenth-century Italian and French books, to illustrated eighteenth- century books and Shelley firsts. HALLIWELL, James Orchard, (Afterwards Halliwell-Philipps) (1820-1889) -- A Catalogue of a Very Valuable and Important Collection of Shakespearian & Dramatic Literature, including numerous early Quarto Editions of Shakespeare ... The First Folio of 1623 ... unique Shakespearian Tracts ... chiefly consisting of the Books used for Mr. Halliwell's Folio Edition of Shakespeare. London: Sotheby, Wilkinson and Hodge, 23 May, 1856. 8 o. PRICED in a contemporary hand. The first public sale of books from the Shakespeare library of Halliwell, the great Shakespeare scholar and rejected son-in-law of Sir Thomas Phillipps, forced upon him by financial circumstances, until his wife inherited the Phillipps estates.
