UNIQUE COPY OF THE FIRST SURVIVING EDITION, and possibly the earliest specialist work on the planting of fruit trees. It is a practical handbook, giving advice on planting and grafting plum, cherry, peach, apple and pear trees; for preserving their fruit; for encouraging sweetness and early ripening; and for combatting infestation. It also recommends a prayer to be said at the time of planting or grafting. Only recently discovered and reported to the Gesamtkatalog (now GW M2060525), the present edition appears to precede all other recorded editions (ISTC lists 7); all are undated but assigned to Paris or Lyons from about 1488 to about 1500, and all survive in one copy only. Two versions of the text, often attributed to Petrus de Crescentiis, are distinguished. The present copy accords with CIBN M-80 and M-81.
