Von natur, art, gebruch, und nutzbarkeit aller gewächss, früchten, thyereren, und alles des der mensch geleben, oder in dienstlicher übung haben soll. (Strassburg: Johann Schott for Johann Knoblauch and Paul Götz), 1518. Folio, 280 x 200 mm., contemporary blind-stamped pigskin, sides panelled with pineapple and foliated roll-tools, inner panel with medallion roll and central arabesque cartouche, one (of two) brass clasps, edges stained blue, rubbed, slightly wormed, upper inner hinge split, lacking last leaf blank, title leaf torn along gutter and with 7-inch repaired internal tear, repaired tears to b1, h3 and A2, minor worming at end, small dampstain to lower gutter margins . Collation: a-z A-E 6 F 8 . 175 leaves (of 176, lacking final blank). Gothic type, double column, title printed in red and black, nearly full-page woodcut on a6v in the style of Hans Baldung showing the Creation, the expulsion from Paradise, Jesus, etc., 253 woodcuts in text (including repeats), of which over 120 of plants, the remainder showing people engaged in agriculture, animal husbandry, viticulture, etc., spaces for initials with guide letters, some historiated or ornamental woodcut initials. A few woodcuts with partial early coloring in light brown wash. Fourth edition in German -- one of 36 recorded sixteenth-century editions -- of Pier' de Crescenzi's classic treatise on agriculture. This edition is the first of this translation and the first to use this assemblage of woodcuts. The scenes of rural activities are slightly modernized reverse copies of the cuts from the previous illustrated editions, while most of the plant woodcuts derive from those used in Johann and Conrad Hist's edition of the Herbarius Latinus (1484); two or three of the larger woodcuts are copied from the Prüss-Beck Hortus Sanitiatis series. Klebs-Becher 62; Muther 1504; Nissen BBI 425; Ritter 596. Provenance : "Loci Capucinorum B---?", 19th-century inscription on title -- Kenneth K. Mackenzie; Horticultural Society of New York, bookplate.
