(10 x 8 in.), integral blank, embossed stationer's stamp at top left-hand corner . Fine condition. [ With :] Autograph free frank ("Free D. Crockett" on address panel with text in Crockett's hand (to Osgood in Washington), no other postal markings. DAVY CROCKETT'S GLOWING RECOMMENDATION FOR A YOUNG PAINTER An interesting letter on behalf of a young artist who had executed a portrait of Crockett. The letter, written at the beginning of Crockett's second term as Tennnessee Congressman, exhibits the occasional misspellings typical of the frontiersman turned politician (Crockett had only had some six months of formal schooling). He writes: "Mr. S.S. Osgood informs me that he is about to leave this city for Boston to his residence and as I consider it due this young gentleman and have been quite imtimate [ sic ] with him during the winter and as he has done me the favour to paint my portrate [ sic ] and as it is due to him that I shall State the masterly manner in which he has performed that work. I have no hesitation in saying that it is the most perfect likeness I ever saw in fact I consider him more perfect as an artis [ sic ] than any man I ever saw. I take much pleasure in thus expressing my opinion of his great perseverance in the business. He is a young man of good morals and attentive to his business..." S.S. Osgood (1808-1885) born in Boston, painted portraits of a number of eminent Americans; Crockett had been impressed by Osgood's portrait of Henry Clay. Osgood later was active in London, New York and California.
