RARE CROCKETT LETTER TO DANIEL WEBSTER. Autograph Letter Signed (“David Crockett”), 2 pp recto and verso, 4to with integral autograph address leaf, [Jackson, TN], December 18, 1832, to Senator Daniel Webster, regarding the family of Col. Henry Dyer, leaves creased and mildly toned, some minor restoration at spine, original wax seal still present. Soldier, politician, and frontiersman David Crockett holds a special place in American folk history as a hero of both Tennessee and Texas. Crockett writes this letter to Massachusetts Senator Daniel Webster on behalf of a fellow veteran of the Creek War of 1813-1814, whose dedication to the military has left his family destitute. In part: “ I will make no appoligy for troubling you with this letter I have been in conversation with my friend Colo Joel Henry Dyer upon a Subject which I feel a deep interest. / I have advised him to lay the clame of the heirs of Colo Henry Dyer be fore Congress and I hope you will give your aid to an amible widow and creditable family which from the circumstances of Colo. Dyers devotion his whole time to the services of his Country has occasioned Colo. Dyer to leave his Family in an imbarised situation and much oppressed.” See illustration.
