Crocodile wallet, 4.25 x 2.75 in., with pierced silver mounts, Birmingham 1900, L.K. Presented to Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Connaught at the opening of the Y.M.C.A. Building at Newcastle Upon Tyne, May 9, 1900 by Vera C. Murray. Princess Louise Margaret of Prussia (1860-1917) was born at Marble Palace near Potsdam to Princess Maria Anna of Anhalt and Prince Friedrich Karl of Prussia, a distinguished field commander in the Franco-Prussian War. She wed Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn and third son of Queen Victoria, on March 13, 1879. In her new role as Duchess of Connaught, Louise Margaret accompanied her husband on his numerous military postings throughout the British Empire, pursuing philanthropic endeavors along the way, including establishing hospitals for women with female doctors and nurses in present-day Mumbai. Back in England in 1900, the Duke and Duchess of Connaught built a Y.M.C.A. on Blackett Street in Newcastle Upon Tyne, and the civic-minded couple attended its opening later that May. Lot includes 25 Øre - Oscar II coin from Norway, obverse with crown monogram and "BRODERFOLKENES VEL" and reverse with "25 ØRE" and the coat of arms of Norway dividing date ("1876"). Also with photograph, 2 x 3 in., matted to 14.375 x 18.375 in., by W.D. Downey of Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught in uniform in 1917. Photograph previously offered at auction as part of Lot 1453 in Sotheby’s landmark sale of property from the collection of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, September 11-19, 1997.
