CROOK, George (1829-1890). Annual Report of Brigadier General George Crook. Military Operations, Department of the Platte . Fort Omaha, Nebraska: Headquarters for the Department of the Platte, 1879. 8 o (204 x 134 mm). 7 pages. Self-wrappers, partially unopened; green quarter morocco slipcase. Provenance : Clarke Historical Library, Central Michigan University (inkstamp on front wrapper verso). FIRST EDITION. Crook reports on the attempted escape of Cheyenne prisoners from Fort Robinson in northwest Nebraska. Crook was a long-time supporter of Indian rights, and criticized the government's handling of the situation there. The Cheyennes had left their reservation in the Indian Territory to find a better locale and were willing to live peacefully with the whites. The Army, under orders, returned them to the Indian Territory, where the Cheyennes stood in defiance and suffered at least thirty deaths. Apparently unrecorded, the Siebert copy being the only other copy to appear at auction according to American Book Prices Current .
